The average sale price of untreated (raw) sable skin at auction stands at US $ 125 for the past 12 years or at today’s exchange rate it is about 8 000 rubles.

The forecast for possible purchasing prices for the hunting season for 2016-2017

Over the past 10 years, market prices for sable skins changed many times, the amplitude of their fluctuations amounted from 75 to 240 US $ per skin.

The most favorable period was from 2009 to 2013, when the price for skins steadily increased from 85 to 240 US Dollars. Then a sharp fall in prices was observed.

The year of 2016 should be considered a default year, when in January the average sales price was US $ 75 (the currency exchange rate was around 80 rubles per dollar). This is the lowest value for the last 12 years.

April 2016 showed the first increase in prices associated with the influx of buyers at the auction, who wanted to buy sable skin for the January low price, limited supply of raw skins (less than 200 thousand skins) and a certain strengthening of the ruble rate.

Supply and demand for sable wild raw skins are the main factors affecting the prices.

It should be remembered that the number, limits and harvesting of sables in the last 10 years has a tendency to increase, but demand, 95% of which is provided by domestic consumers, is now in a stage of stagnation. In other words, fur coats made of Russian sable in Italy and Greece are sold in Russia, as a rule in the “rich” regions, or bought by Russian buyers in Milan or Kastoria. Actually, Europeans do not wear fur coats made of sable. Since the 2014-2016 years were very difficult for the Russians, orders for fur coats began to decline.

The average sale price of untreated (raw) sable skin at auction stands at US $ 125 for the past 12 years or at today’s exchange rate it is about 8 000 rubles.

If the economic situation in Russia improves, the prices will be slightly above average, if on the contrary – lower. At present, the improvement is not observed, and hence the increase in price is not expected.

There is a hope that like on the mink market Chinese consumers will increase the market capacity of finished products made of sable fur; as a result, its capacity will grow in the coming years that will cause growth in demand and prices.

Therefore, if you want to develop a forecast on sale prices for sable skins at the next auction you should take into consideration:

  1. Factors that decrease the price:
    • Increase in supply volume (the sable population growth, the increase in limits on production in all sable regions, the increase in the volume of the skins production);
    • The reduction of real incomes of the Russians;
    • The lack of new markets (low activity of Russian consumers of finished products).
  2. Factors that increase the price:
    • Revenue growth of top and middle class Russians and, consequently, the increase in orders for finished products in wholesalers and retailers;
    • Opening of new consumer markets (Korea, China and others).

Anticipate and be aware that the sale price for Siberian sable depends primarily on the sale price for the sable at the last auction and how urgently hunter or hunting enterprise needs money..

The average price for a skin was US $ 105 in April 2016 (Barguzinsky type was more expensive, Eniseisky type – cheaper)..

Then, each new intermediary chain (auction, large collector enterprises, medium and small buyers of skins, hunting companies) takes from the hunter from 5% to 20% or more of their own commissions.

The scheme of lowering prices in the chain “sale price at the auction – a middleman commissions – the purchase price for the hunter” looks in general terms as follows: auction takes from the sale price of your skin about 5-15%, a major supplier to the auction – 5-10% more, medium or small reseller takes 10-20%, hunting grounds users – 15-25 percent or more. We take all these from the sale price of the April 2016 auction – $ 105 (i.e. about 6720 rubles) and obtain the price at which the hunter can sell the average skin.

Of course, this is averaged figure; nobody canceled the performance of set-off in quality, which can cause both the increase and decrease in the price.

As a rule, those hunters and collectors who hurry to get money for their goods, receive less than those who agree to wait for the results of trading.

Good luck!
